Supahoney is what early Radiohead could have been if they’d learnt how to take a joke. Smashing Pumpkins, if Smashing Pumpkins weren’t afraid of the dark. If Soundgarden could count up to 9, this is what they’d sound like: A sludgy sort of post-rock, oozing with shoegaze sensibilities. Having formed as teenagers, Supahoney spent their high school years growing out their hair and pouring over their instruments. They tore onto the scene with their debut 2019 single, ‘Have You Seen?’, an energetic track that holds a classic millennium rock buzz close to its heart. A ballsy 2019 tour blessed the east coast of Australia with the sound of Supahoney, proving a surprising success and let their eponymous EP take on a new maturity far beyond their years. Released in early 2020, the EP is dizzying. Glassy, spiralling riffs spin out beautifully in ‘Miss Communication’; the choppy, rich chords in ‘Lichen Tile’ threaten to swallow an unaware listener whole. Their sound is hallmarked by a burning intensity that launched them to headline Sydney’s prestigious Factory Theatre one month after their latest release. That single, ‘You’re Getting on My Nerves’, is a punchy indie fuck-you that demands a dancefloor. It provides an ample warning of their overwhelming potential, as culminating in their yet-to-be-released album. The dynamo four-piece sets even the stickiest Sydney pubs alight with guts and gusto as they steal the stage. Dylan Wallace’s voice drips with sugar and smoke over the top of Beniamino Lopes’ gossamer, intricate riffs - but their sound is kept raw, rough and bottom-heavy by Declan Heraghty’s dulcet bass and Ciaran Heraghty’s powerful domain over the kit. Together, they piece together a sound you could just swim in. With Supahoney rises hot-blooded, low-riding rock with a delicate complexity that’s poised to change the game.
